John 21:15-19:
Jesus gives Peter the opportunity to repent and reaffirm his faith. This beautiful encounter between Peter and the risen Lord is Peter’s opportunity for public repentance. Peter knows he has sinned. He denied knowing Jesus not once, but three times. Three times Peter professes his love in response to Jesus’ questions. Jesus’ role as shepherd is now passed on to Peter and he too will lay down his life.
I know that like Peter, I am weak. I also know that you love me and in that love I am strong.
